Quantum Fiber Review

Owned by America’s 6th biggest telecommunications company, Lumen Technologies, Quantum Fiber is a fiber-exclusive arm of the conglomerate, offering gigabit and multigigabit symmetrical internet speeds to residential and small business customers.

The brand was formed in September 2020, when Lumen Technologies acquired CenturyLink and decided to segregate its traditional copper and fiber offerings. As a result, three separate brands came into being; Quantum Fiber, CenturyLink, and Lumen.

Quantum Fiber offers up to 8 gigabits of symmetrical internet speeds in 16 states, mostly in the western United States, for a starting price of $50 per month. It was reported in a press release that the combined fiber network of Lumen is between 8 million and 10 million locations. Out of which, Quantum Fiber is responsible for servicing 2.8 million locations. Currently, over 803,000 people are actively subscribed to their service and enjoying 99.9 percent network uptime at the lowest possible rates.

Quantum Fiber’s streamlined service offers two standard, month-to-month plans with equal upload and download speeds of up to 1 Gig, available in 691 cities. However, the 8 Gig plan is offered in only 18 select cities, and prospective customers must call the 24/7 helpline to confirm the availability and price of the plan in their zip code.

All the Quantum Fiber internet plans include whole-home WiFi coverage, unlimited data, and contract-free service. New subscribers of the gigabit plan are eligible for free professional installation, which is $129 on the house. The high-speed fiber internet service can be bundled with DirecTV Stream packages, popular TV streaming services (e.g., Hulu, Disney+, FuboTV, Philo), and home/ office phone lines for discounts of up to $20 per month.

With so much to learn about this relatively new fiber internet provider in town, let’s start with the pros and cons to get an overview.

Quantum Fiber Internet Plans

Initially, Quantum Fiber offered four-speed tiers to residential broadband subscribers, with monthly fees starting at $49/mo and peaking at $300 per month for the 8 Gig tier. The base internet plan offered 200 Mbps of download and upload speed, and the remaining three plans delivered 1 Gig, 3 Gig, and 8 Gig speeds. But a lot has changed since August 2022.

Now, Quantum Fiber’s official website only lists two high-speed internet plans, and a separate prompt enables customers to check for 8-Gig internet service.

Quantum Fiber 500 Mbps Plan

The Quantum Fiber 500 Mbps internet plan is the starter internet plan in the product listings. It costs $50 per month, which is the fixed charge for the monthly, contract-less, prepaid broadband service. The internet fee includes 360 WiFi coverage, unlimited data, and a $100 Mastercard reward card (for customers who order the service online).

The 500 Mbps Quantum Fiber Internet plan is purpose-built for fast download and multiple video chats. Its ultrafast speeds, low latency, and 99.9 percent network reliability can easily handle buffer-free streaming in ultra-high-definition (4K quality) on 6 or more devices. As one of the most affordable, high-speed fiber broadband plans in the market, their 500 Mbps internet plan has become a go-to option for small households, avid gamers, binge-watchers, and remote workers.

Quantum Fiber 940 Mbps Plan

For most Quantum Fiber Internet customers, the 940 Mbps or gigabit Internet plan is the premium speed tier in the product portfolio. The plan is available at a standard rate of $75 per month. The monthly service fee includes free professional installation, whole-home WiFi equipment, and a $100 reward card. Like the base plan, their gigabit internet service comes with symmetrical speeds, unlimited data, and zero-term agreements, allowing you to change plans or cancel the service without incurring an early termination fee.

With an upload speed of up to 940 Mbps, Quantum Fiber’s 1-Gig internet plan is 20 times faster than the available cable internet plans. It is best suited for 4K streaming and can download the most sought-after online games in under 13 minutes. Similarly, it can download a 1-hour-long video in 4K quality in 11 seconds. Their 940 Mbps internet plan can easily cater to medium-sized households and small businesses seeking multi-device functionality.

Additional Charges

Quantum Fiber’s exceptional service is centered upon the elimination of add-on charges that unnecessarily hike broadband internet bills and are considered a nuisance among customers. Let’s dissect this boon further to see how they use fee waivers to keep its costs on the lower end and stay on top of the competition.

Installation Fees

Previously, Quantum Fiber charged a professional installation fee of up to $99 on the provision and activation of its 200 Mbps and 500 Mbps internet plans. In contrast, gigabit and multigigabit internet plan subscribers were offered a professional installation fee waiver of up to $129 in value. However, to beat the competition and attract more customers, now they absorb up to $1,500 in construction costs, effectively delivering fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service in most urban and suburban areas within its 16-state footprint. Therefore, all of their plans include free expert installation.

All you have to do is set an appointment for tech installation (the option will appear when you purchase the plan online or over the call) and get a permission letter from your landlord if you rent accommodation. The professional installation takes around 3 hours to complete, during which a certified technician will set up the equipment, activate the service, and briefly explain what you need to do to reap the maximum benefits of your fiber internet and 360 WiFi service.

Equipment Fees

Your monthly Quantum Fiber internet fee includes the equipment rental charges. In the case of an expert installation, the technician will either bring a WiFi-enabled modem or a SmartNID device to ensure that your house is fiber-ready for the service. All the customers get up to four 360 WiFi pods for seamless wireless coverage around the house. However, if you opt for self-installation, a starter kit containing all the necessary equipment will be delivered to your house at no added cost.

The only downside is that the leased equipment must be returned to Quantum Fiber within 30 days of service cancellation. Failure to do so results in an equipment unreturned fee of up to $200 per device.

Early Termination Fees

Quantum Fiber does not tie you down with annual contracts. The monthly prepaid service gives you the flexibility to change your plan or switch to another service provider whenever you deem necessary. The rule is simple. If you do not pay for the next month’s service, the line automatically disconnects, and a termination notice is issued to you.

As there are no contracts, an early termination fee is not applicable, and you can move on without being hundreds of dollars in debt.

Taxes and Surcharges

The monthly fee for Quantum Fiber Internet does not include taxes and surcharges imposed by the state and federal government. The exact amount for this additional fee will vary in each state and may increase with time, depending on government policies. In most cases, this amount should not exceed $5 per month.

Quantum Fiber Customer Satisfaction Score

As we have discussed before, Quantum Fiber is a relatively new provider in the fiber-optic broadband space. It has yet to gain recognition and be considered in the prestigious consumer satisfaction surveys. However, its sister company, CenturyLink continues to be a top performer and ranks as the second-best fiber internet service provider on the American Customer Satisfaction Index 2023, with a score of 78 on a 100-point scale.

Since, CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber are managed by the same holding company, Lumen Technologies, we can assume that their management style, especially pertaining to customer experience, will be similar.

Quantum Fiber vs. Competitors

Several fiber internet providers offer up to multi-gigabit symmetrical speeds in the United States. While the basic nature of the service is similar, such as unlimited data and no annual contracts, the main point of contention lies in prices and nationwide availability. Quantum Fiber, AT&T, and Earthlink are the only 3 renowned providers that refrain from selling plans at promotional rates. Moreover, their fiber internet service is available in more than one-third of the country.

Compared to well-established fiber broadband providers like AT&T, Verizon, and Frontier, Quantum Fiber is new and still growing. So, even though its overall ratings are the second lowest compared to its competitors, the strong foundation of its parent company, speedy expansion, and continuous innovation point toward a bright future for Quantum Fiber.

Fiber Internet Providers Starting Price Max. Speed  Availability  Overall Rating
Quantum Fiber $50.00/mo.  8,000 Mbps  16 states  3.13/ 5 stars
