Spectrum Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)
Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is the largest government assistance initiative for broadband, connecting over 23 million families in the US. Unfortunately, the federal government is winding down this program due to insufficient funds. The FCC has declared that the funds will completely run out by the end of April 2024.
Hence, the ACP internet providers are no longer accepting new applications. However, existing ACP customers can transfer their benefits from one provider to another. So, if you are currently receiving the monthly $30 ACP credit, you can switch to Spectrum’s Internet service to enjoy high-speed Internet plans at a discounted rate.
Benefits
The Affordable Connectivity Program supports millions of low-income families struggling to afford a reliable internet service. In the span of two and a half years, this federal assistance program has partnered with numerous internet providers to make affordable internet more accessible. Spectrum ACP benefits include:
- $30 discount on monthly internet service
- $75 broadband discount for qualifying households on Tribal Lands
- A one-time $100 device discount to increase accessibility
- Equal opportunities for more people
Eligibility Criteria
Although the federal government is no longer accepting new applications, here is what it took to qualify for this program.
- Households with an income bracket at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines were eligible.
- Individuals receiving the benefits of one of the following federal assistance programs also met the qualifying criteria.
- SNAP
- Lifeline
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- WIC
- Veterans Pension or Survivor Benefits
- Any Federal Housing Assistance program, including:
- Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program (Section 8 Vouchers)
- Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)/Section 202/ Section 811
- Public Housing
- Individuals who received a Federal Pell Grant in the current award year could also apply.
The program was also open to people living on Tribal Lands. Qualifying conditions included participation in any one of the following Tribal assistance programs.
- Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
- Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Food Distribution Program on Tribal Reservations
- Tribal Head Start (income-based)
- Affordable Housing Programs for American Indians, Alaska Natives, or Native Hawaiians
Application Process
The FCC has paused new enrollments due to the absence of additional funding from Congress. Meanwhile, existing ACP customers will continue to receive the reward till the end of this program. If you want to switch to Spectrum, call (877) 654-4997 to confirm whether the provider is accepting the transfer of ACP’s benefit.
In short, the future of this program seems quite uncertain. However, several internet providers, including Spectrum, are encouraging their customers to take measures to save this program. Therefore, there is a chance that ACP might continue if Congress pays attention to our collective demands and allocates more funding.
Lifeline Discount for Low-income Households
Lifeline is another federal assistance program that makes the internet slightly more affordable. It is part of the Universal Service Fund and has been actively providing discounts on phone service since 1985.
The FCC expanded this program to cover broadband in 2016. Therefore, qualifying low-income individuals living within Spectrum’s coverage can combine this program with Spectrum’s service to access an affordable internet or phone service.
Benefits
The Lifeline program is focused on making communications more affordable by providing a monthly discount on broadband, telephone service, or internet-voice bundles. This program provides consumers the connection and security they need to access modern resources, including job and educational opportunities. Its main benefits include:
- A $9.25 monthly discount on home internet, telephone service, or internet-voice packages.
- A $34.25 discount on any one of the communication services for eligible consumers on Tribal Lands
Unlike Spectrum ACP, Lifeline addresses the poorest households and is a permanent program from the FCC. Hence, if you qualify for this program, you can get a monthly $9.25 discount on your Spectrum Internet service or any of its mobile plans. But keep in mind that Lifeline only supports one service per household.
Eligibility Criteria
Lifeline’s eligibility requirements are somewhat similar to the ACP. However, the ACP has a broader scope. Lifeline generally focuses on providing affordable communication and connectivity services to households with income at or below 135% of the FCC’s poverty guidelines.
Its qualifying requirements typically include participation in one of the following government assistance programs:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Medicaid
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- The Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit
Meanwhile, consumers in Tribal Lands are eligible for Lifeline if they or someone from their family receives one of the following benefits.
- BIA General Assistance
- Head Start
- Tribal TANF or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
Application Process
You can apply for the Lifeline program through the National Verifier application system. You can access this system either through USAC or a participating internet or phone provider, such as Spectrum. The application process has two simple steps:
Qualify for the Program
Use the USAC’s National Verifier to confirm your qualification. Click on Apply Now and choose your state to get started. Enter your information and submit your application.
Keep in mind that the application process for people living in California, Oregon, and Texas is different. If you live in one of these states, check with your provider or visit your state’s website.
Sign Up to Receive the Lifeline Benefit
If you qualify for the program, choose a phone or internet provider, Spectrum, in your case, and subscribe. If you are an existing Spectrum Internet or Mobile customer, ask the provider to apply the Lifeline benefit to your monthly bill.
Spectrum Free Internet for Low-Income Households
Do you know about the free Spectrum Internet offer? But there is a condition! Spectrum’s free internet for low-income families is limited to existing ACP customers. The provider offers two low-income internet solutions, Spectrum Internet 100 and Internet Assist.
While Internet Assist has a flat rate of $24.99 per month ($29.99 to be exact, if you add $5 for Spectrum’s WiFi), Internet 100 comes at a promo price of $29.99 per month, for 12 months.
Both options can help you lower your monthly internet expenses. However, only one Spectrum internet plan can be truly free when you apply your monthly ACP benefit to it, Internet Assist. With Internet 100, you will have to pay an extra $7 for Spectrum’s WiFi, increasing the total amount to $36.99, which exceeds the ACP credit.
